How Do Braces Work?

The two main components of fixed braced are brackets and arch wires. Brackets are cemented onto the teeth and the arch wire threads through the brackets and is tied with small elastic loops. The arch wire has a memory to return to its original shape over a period of time and in doing so will pull the teeth to their correct positions. The majority of treatments will take on average, 18 months to 2 years. Patients are required to have their braces adjusted once every 4 to 6 weeks.

Hidden Braces

The ultimate in invisible braces. The brackets are individually tailored to the contours of each tooth of the patient and are fitted to the inner surface of the teeth. The advantage is that it is totally invisible from the outside. The disadvantages are that they are more expensive, treatments tend to take longer and there is greater discomfort to the tongue and sometimes the speech can be affected.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most popular with kids and teenagers. They love to have different colours of the small elastic ties to match different occasions. The modern braces are much smaller than before.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are tooth coloured braces. Once fitted all you see is the wire.
